Zipper and Bag Style Matrix
The zipper and the bag style are chosen together, because the right zip depends on how heavy the bag is and how wide the opening runs.
|
Closure |
How it works |
Fits |
|
Press-to-close (PTC) |
Two poly tracks pressed shut by hand |
Up to about 20 lbs; below that, a hand can press the full width closed |
|
Slider zipper |
A slider puck closes the track in one pass |
30–50 lbs; the answer to a bag opening too wide to press shut |
|
Pocket zip |
The zipper sits inside a folded pocket above the fill line |
50–100 lbs, and any kibble bag: crumbs stay out of the track, so the bag reseals every time |
A press-to-close track on a 50 lb bag fails in the field in a specific way: you cannot press 50 cm of track evenly with a thumb, and kibble dust packs into the tracks, so the bag stops resealing. That is why heavy pet food bags move to a slider or a pocket zip - not a style choice, a mechanical one.
Bag styles by load: stand-up pouches carry up to about 20 lbs with a stable base; from 30 lbs up, flat-bottom (quad-seal) bags spread the load across four seals and take a die-cut handle; above 50 lbs the handle reinforcement and bottom seal width are specified together - tell us the kibble density and we size the base.
Capacity: Pounds, Kilograms, Litres
A pound figure is the weight of kibble inside, not the bag. To plan cartons and pallets you need volume, and kibble bulk density runs about 0.35–0.45 kg/L depending on kibble size:
|
Bag |
Kibble weight |
Volume of kibble |
|
30 lbs |
13.6 kg |
30–39 L |
|
40 lbs |
18.1 kg |
40–52 L |
|
50 lbs |
22.7 kg |
50–65 L |
|
100 lbs |
45.4 kg |
100–130 L |
Quote us your kibble density (or send a filled bag) and we confirm bag dimensions, gusset depth and carton quantity before tooling.
Barrier Structures: Foil, Metallized and Recyclable
Kibble shelf life is decided by fat oxidation, not by water. Extruded kibble carries 8–18% sprayed-on fat, and rancidity - not moisture - is what ends a bag's shelf life. So oxygen barrier matters more than moisture barrier, and the honest comparison looks like this:
|

Recyclable |
Typical kibble shelf life |

PET / AL foil / PE |

|
Mono-PE with EVOH (recyclable) |
Good, falls at high humidity |

Yes (mono-material streams) |
9–12 months |
Two rules follow. First, foil is the barrier champion but it ends recyclability and kills any window - brands that want kibble visible choose metallized or clear high-barrier structures and accept the shorter claim. Second, recyclable does not mean barrier-free: a mono-PE bag with an EVOH core is the working recyclable option for dog food; plain mono-PE without EVOH is for low-fat, short-life products, and we will say so before you commit a 12-month shelf-life claim to it.
Grease is the other failure path, and it is local: sprayed-on fat wicks along the sealant layer at the seals, staining the print and lifting the laminate from the inside. The countermeasures are sealant selection and seal width, and they are specified per formula - tell us your fat coating percentage and we confirm the sealant.
Pet Food Packaging Related Information
What are the most common packaging types for pet food?
Pet food comes in many common packaging formats, such as handled bags, metal tins, tear‑open pouches, and containers in various shapes. Among these, handled packaging has become especially popular. These often feature a resealable spout and an integrated handle, making them easier to carry and pour-which greatly improves the user experience.
What packaging works best for wet pet food?
Wet pet food is typically packaged in convenient, user‑friendly formats. Popular choices include simple designs, portable pouches, single‑serve packs, and packages with clear windows. Small, soft pouches with large caps work particularly well because they offer better product visibility and are easier for consumers to open.
Which packaging styles are preferred for pet treats?
Pet treats are commonly sold in tear‑open packs, eco‑friendly packaging, interactive designs, or containers with unusual shapes. Currently, eco‑friendly packaging is the most appealing to consumers, as it combines convenience with sustainability and aligns with today's environmentally conscious trends.

Food Contact and Inks
RoHS is an electronics regulation; it does not apply to a food bag, and we do not cite it. The documents that matter for a dog food laminate are:
- Food-contact compliance of the film layers: EU food-contact framework (Regulation 1935/2004) with plastics migration limits under Regulation 10/2011, or FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 for olefin films, depending on your market.
- Low-migration ink compliance for the printed surface: inks formulated to EuPIA guidelines and checked against the Swiss Ordinance on food-contact materials (817.023.21) - the print is on the outside, but migration through the web is the audit point.
- Heavy metals in packaging per Directive 94/62/EC.

FAQ
Q1: Which zipper should I choose for a 50 lb bag?
A: A slider or a pocket zip. A press-to-close track on a 50 lb opening is too wide to press shut evenly by hand, and kibble dust packs into the tracks over time. The pocket zip keeps crumbs out of the track entirely, which is why it is the standard closure on large pet food bags.
Q2: Can you make both stand-up pouches and flat-bottom bags?
A: Yes. Up to about 20 lbs a stand-up pouch carries the load fine; from 30 lbs up we move to a flat-bottom quad-seal bag with a die-cut handle, and above 50 lbs the handle and bottom-seal width are specified together. Tell us the kibble density and we size the base.
Q3: How many pounds fit in each bag?
A: 30, 40, 50 or 100 lbs of kibble - that is 13.6 to 45.4 kg, or roughly 30 to 130 litres of kibble depending on bulk density. Send us your kibble density or a filled sample bag and we confirm dimensions and carton quantities.
Q4: What is the barrier structure?
A: Multi-layer laminate: a print web (PET, BOPP or PA), a barrier layer (aluminium foil or metallised PET), and a PE or CPP sealant. Foil gives the longest shelf life but is not recyclable; a recyclable mono-PE structure with an EVOH core covers 9–12 month claims. We match the structure to your shelf-life target and fat content.
Q5: Will the bag stain or delaminate from fat in the kibble?
A: Grease attacks at the seals, where fat wicks along the sealant layer. Sealant selection and seal width are specified per formula - tell us your sprayed-on fat percentage (typically 8–18% on extruded kibble) and the seal area is built for it.
Q6: Is the packaging food-contact compliant?
A: The film layers comply with EU Regulation 1935/2004 and 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR 177.1520, and the inks are low-migration grades checked against the Swiss Ordinance 817.023.21. Reports on your exact structure are available on request. We do not cite RoHS - that is an electronics regulation.
Q7: Can I get samples before tooling?
A: Yes. Free samples in your structure, zipper type and artwork, so you test the seal and the zip on your own kibble before paying for cylinders.
Q8: How do I get a quote?
A: Send us five things: capacity in lbs, structure preference (foil / metallised / recyclable), bag style, zipper type and artwork status. We quote with cylinder cost separated, so you can see the one-time tooling apart from the per-bag price.
